How to check a builder licence in WA yourself
Building and Energy (Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety) publishes licences on the WA Online Licence Search. It’s free and takes a couple of minutes.
- Open the WA Online Licence Search.
- Search for the builder by name or registration number.
- Check the registration is current and matches the name on your contract.
Home building insurance and deposits
Home indemnity insurance is required for building work that needs a building permit and is valued at more than $20,000.
The maximum deposit is 6.5% for contracts between $7,500 and $500,000.
Check more than the licence
A current licence doesn’t tell you whether the business is in financial trouble. These national registers cover businesses in every state:
- ABN Lookup: Confirms the ABN is active and who it belongs to.
- ASIC published notices: Liquidation, administration and winding-up notices.
- ASIC banned and disqualified register: People banned from managing companies.
